Trenchless Sewer Repair Techniques
Depending on the nature of the sewer issue, two types of trenchless sewer repair can be implemented. These are pipe lining and pipe bursting.
1. Pipe Lining
Pipe lining is the ideal trenchless sewer repair method when pipes are deteriorated due to age or tree root invasion. This method works best when there is still some of the original pipe structure left underground as it repairs leaks and cracks in pipes by reinforcing their original structure.
The technique of pipe lining consists of installing a cure-in-place pipe within the structure of an existing pipe. A pipe liner, coated with adhesive resin, is fed into the existing pipe and inflated to stick against the walls of the pipe. This cures in a few hours to provide a strong, leak-proof reinforcement to the previous pipe structure. Pipe lining is one of the quickest, easiest, and most cost-effective ways to repair leaks and structural damage to pipes underground without excavation.
2. Pipe Bursting
Pipe bursting is a more intensive method used to destroy old pipes and install new ones. In pipe bursting, two small access holes are dug and then an expander head or burster head is drawn through on a steel cable. This burster head destroys the old pipe and widens the pipe space to prepare for the new pipe to be laid.
Directly behind the burster head, a new polyethylene pipe is drawn into the old pipe space. The new high-density polyethylene pipe resists corrosion and wear for many decades; it’s also highly flexible so it easily works with the trenchless technique. The pipe bursting technique can be used to completely replace heavily damaged underground pipes and is normally completed within 1 to 2 days.
Trenchless sewer repair is the ideal way to efficiently repair underground pipes – without the cost and hassle of excavation.
